Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my phone for the watch app to work?

No. The watch app runs independently — once installed it works with the phone switched off or left at home. That is the whole point of it.

Does it work offline?

Entirely. There is no network code in the app at all. The Morse table, phonetic alphabet and Q-codes are bundled inside it, so it behaves identically in airplane mode or on a summit with no signal.

Why does the Grid screen ask for my location?

To compute your Maidenhead locator, and only that. The fix is used on the device and discarded — nothing is stored or transmitted. Location is only requested while you are using the app, never in the background. Decline it and every other screen still works.

My key sends dahs when I mean dits.

The threshold is two dit-lengths, taken from your character speed. At 15 WPM a dit is 80 ms, so anything held beyond 160 ms counts as a dah. If everything is coming out as dahs, lower the character speed in Settings until the timing suits your hand — then raise it back as your fist improves.

Why is there a long pause before a letter appears?

The app waits one character gap before committing, exactly as a receiving operator would. With Farnsworth on (the default is 15 WPM characters at 10 WPM overall) that gap is deliberately generous. Raise the overall speed to shorten it, or press ↵ to commit immediately.

The complication or tile shows an old locator.

That is deliberate, and it tells you so: it reads "You are here" only while the fix is under ten minutes old, and "You were here · 14m ago" after that. A watch complication is not allowed to run GPS on its own, so it shows the last fix the app took. Open the app to refresh it.

I hear no sidetone.

Check the device is not muted and the volume is up. On a watch with no speaker, or in a quiet setting, pair Bluetooth headphones. The tone is generated live, so there is nothing to download.

Where do my callsign and settings go?

Nowhere. They stay on the device. Deleting the app removes them.

Very welcome — this app exists because a wrist is a better place for a key than a pocket. Tell me what you would use on the air, and why.

Platform Support

The Wear OS tile has to be added by you from the tile carousel — an app is not allowed to install one for you.
